Jon Barker

Jon Barker was born in Yorkshire in 1950. He became a professional artist during his mid 40’s following an earlier career in marketing management.

Jon is self taught, having spent many years studying the techniques of past masters as well as successful contemporary artists. He gradually developed his own distinctive style and is now best known for his “City Life” series which has been extensively published in the Uk and abroad. His semi abstract landscapes and seascapes are also popular.

His “City Life” paintings invariably feature major iconic land marks such as Big Ben, The Eiffel Tower, The Empire State Building and Brooklyn Bridge. However, Jon’s intention is not to present us with the world as it is, but to transport us to a more idealised society unthreatened by the urban realities of the 21st century. His world is a genteel and romantic world, often incorporating a timeless sense of nostalgia. He likes to feel that Cary Grant or Audrey Hepburn would be at home in one of his paintings.

His compositions are carefully constructed but the execution is painterly and expressive. Tonal balance and simplicity are hallmarks of his work.
